A Serious Problem

Post by Dead Herald on Sat Jul 02, 2011 4:25 pm

So I have a problem. I can't seem to tear myself away from competitive gaming.

I don't enjoy games like Team Fortress 2, League of Legends or Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I think I might have at one point in my life, but now I don't. I never feel any satisfaction from success in these games at all, but when things start to go south, I get incredibly agitated to the point where I start yelling and cursing, banging my mouse and throwing things sometimes... The obvious solution is to stop playing these games, except that I can't stop. There's this nagging, twitching, burning entity within me that keeps telling me I have something to prove to these people. And it compels me to go back, again and again and again and always with the same results, over and over and over.

A friend of mine said this is addictive behavior. She said I need to do something to fix this. I'm really not sure what. I didn't play any of these games at all last night and I suppose that's good, except I was terribly bored and felt the nagging compulsions grating at my brain. I really have no clue what to do with myself. I've been throwing myself at video games for the better part of my life and it kind of kills me to think that after 30 years I'm just really bad at games. And I don't want to scapegoat the games because addictive behavior is quite clearly evident in the genetics of both lines of my family.

I'm just really at a loss right now...

I think why you feel bored is because you've been playing the same ones for too long, a new game might make you feel satisfied
In regards to addiction, I don't think that is the case, I think you play them so much because you have nothing else to do rather than actual addiction..

It's natural to feel frustrated at things, especially in regards to things like games, where lags and bugs are too often exploited or occur.

Then why do people tell me I'm not supposed to get frustrated at such things?

(usually my mother...)

From what you told me of your mother, she's retarded.

This is true.

But when I last played TF2, we had a fairly good run on a payload map, right up until the last point where everyone on my team decided to herp-derp and not push the cart or build an uber or do any of the normally accepted practices conducive with strategy in such a situation. When I pointed this out, I was berated by a server admin for "harassing my teammates"? confused

And League of Legends... I love the concept of the game. But it's so frustrating trying to play a team game with people who will not play like a team. And then have them turn around and scream at me because I didn't have 1:1 or better K/D...Someone told me I need to get friends to play these games with me. I don't really think I should badger people into doing something like that.

I believe Cuddly Razor plays it, I could ask him if he would want to play with you.

Holy crap, why haven't I seen this before?

I mean, I know there's this thing you lot do where you snark at Herald's old posts but really, truly I wanted to have been able to snark at him when he was HERE.

This is the whiniest thing he's ever written.

Actually, no, it's not. But it's close
