Films you hate

Post by GrinningManiac on Tue Oct 19, 2010 9:20 pm

Sunshine

A crappy, overblown, schizophrenic film that couldn't decide its genre

It started off as a crappy Armegeddon-Beaten-By-Science (a la Armageddon) film with a really sh*tty disaster and a completley impossible (even with my limited grasp of nuclear physics) solution that wouldn't, and I mean wouldn't work

Then, it's a psychological thriller about cabin fever. Only for about six seconds, because then they discover the LAST team who tried to save the day, and it turns out (dum dum duuuh) one is still alive and badly insane.

Then it turns into a slasher

Then it turns into a monster film

Then it ended. I think. I don't know, I stopped watching. I think they saved the day, but it's pointless, because it's explicitly pointed out at the very start of the movie that in order to build the big ship to carry the big Anti-Doomday Device and its crew, all the nations of the earth had to scrouge together the last resources avaliable on the planet to fund and realise this huge project. So now they're alive, they're stuck on a starving, barren planet with nothing to rebuild with and nothing to rebuild from

great, a happy ending to a film where I genuinely wanted everyone to die!

I fell asleep near the end of sunshine. I can't remember much beyond that, but falling asleep during a movie can't be a good thing.

I don't really hate any films. Strongly dislike, sure, but not hate to the point which I wish they'd never been made... Though my feelings towards the new Alice in Wonderland are the closest to hate

Thank god. Someone else who hated Sunshine. I thought it was just me.

Oh man where to start.

It wanted to be a psychological character study, but all the characters were made of cardboard, so the only way they could show all this group tension and seething hatred that was apparently going on was by having a psychiatrist character that people actually explained their motivations to in tedious detail. Show don't tell, dude.

The other thing that pissed me off was the really obvious bullshit references to films like 2001, Event Horizon, Dark Star, etc. It was like being nudged in the ribs by the director every five minutes, who'd then go "look he's called Pinbacker just like in Dark Star! That was a clever reference wasn't it? God, I love being really clever, me. I wish everyone was as clever as I am."

It also required not giggling whenever anyone said in a super serious tone of voice "the sun is dying!"

Oh my god! The Sun is Dying!

How are we to fix this?

Let's throw away all the resources we require to live by sending TWO ships into the sun with an anti-doomsday device that causes some kind of big bang (because of course, the big bang creates SUNS, not universes...)

I can't remember where, but some dude explained the science behind it (or lack of it) and concluded it was about as effective as trying to set a mountain on fire with a matchstick.

Also, random Monster of the Week villain

Also, WHY IN GODS NAME do they have a SUN-OBSERVING deck? what could they be looking for? It BLINDS you and it sent the last ship MAD. DON'T. PUT. IT. IN. THERE. WHEN. YOU. HAVE. LIMITED. RESOURCES

I think the earth DESERVED to die...from the dumbz

I think I need to rewatch 28 Days Later. I seem to remember it pissed me off a bit with the whole nudge-nudge wink-wink "I've seen Day of the Dead, you've seen Day of the Dead, let's be self-indulgently referential and postmodern" crap, and I had difficulty seeing beyond that although there was undoubtedly some good stuff there I was probably blind to.

I suspect there's just something I find a bit annoying about Danny Boyle these days; something I just don't quite get. He lost me with pre-comeback de Caprio vehicle "The Beach," in which a bunch of the the worst people ever to have lived went to the third world to find themselves, but it turned out their perfect holiday experience was ruined by all the poor foreigners who (inconsiderately) already lived there. They then spend the film trying to find an "authentic" foreign travel experience unsullied by actual foreign people.

I did love Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, though. Which is me properly showing my age.

I'll admit I liked Slumdog because I enjoyed the 'Indian' asthetic and what everything looked like. On reflection, I didn't give a rat's behind about the story.

Apparantly Indians hated it because it was boring (says the country that gives you bollywood...) and misportrayed the nature of the Indian slums, showing them to be hostile, dog-eat-dog, racist lynch-mobs headquarters rather than the encompassing and tightly-knit (slightly racist) communities they really are

Oh yeah, it was very well shot, but I just found it totally, totally uninteresting. The whole thing was so obviously trying to be oscar bait it just made me sick.

Have you seen the trailer for that film about the runaway train? (the film, in case you haven't, is about a driverless freight train carrying explosives tearing through an urban enviorment, crushing things on the line and threatening to explode. Denzeil (sp?) Washington and some guy are freight-drivers heading to catch it and stop it)

The trailer starts with all this stuff about poor-paying jobs and this young 'new guy' working on the tracks with Washington, the 'old man whose tired of your sh*t' character.

Until the first caravan was crushed underwheel, I thought it was going to be Oscar bait about male bonding and struggling to get by in a dead-end blue collar job. Then, without warning, EXPLOSIONS

Looks hilariously bad.

Thought I'd share that with you. The only reason I brought it up was because both your post and this story contains 'oscar bait'

Exploding runaway train? Holy crap that sounds like the plot to the sort of insane disasterTV movies they used to show on Channel 5 that always had "atomic" in the name.

Last Donzel Washington film I saw was Book of Eli, which started off interesting but had secretly been licking delicious delicious lead paint. About halfway through it just grins like an idiot and then shits in its own pants, turning it into a bad fanfic about Cormac McCarthy's The Road that has been written in crayon.

Hold up, there's a Steven Seagal film with pretty much the exact same plot.

Goddamn Hollywood.
