Lovely, lovely books!

Post by Walnutman on Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:11 pm

I used to love reading books, I'd read one or two a week on average. Recently, due to a mix of drink, school and games I've stopped reading completely. However, recently I've suddenly got a hunger to read again, problem is I've read everything in my house several times. This is where you all come in. Suggest me some books you've found particularly good over the years.

For help, I really want to start reading H.P. Lovecraft. I'll read pretty much anything but I prefer horror, Sci-fi and crime novels. For non-fiction I tend to read things about wars and such. Length is no issue.

Also, what are your reading tastes? How often do you read? What are your preferred genres?

I haven't been reading as much lately as I usually do, for whatever reason. Usually, I do a book a week, but I seem to be dropping off.

Must address that.

Anyway, I'm currently reading Mr Nice by Howard Marks, and I hope to move on to the Strugatsky Brothers (The guys who wrote the book that inspired STALKER) Noon Universe series (Which heavily inspired Avatar), as I hear they're right good like.

Generally, I'll read pretty much anything except chick lit. I haven't found a single redeeming book in that category.

I also have a Superman graphic novel, Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, by the always reliable and grouchy Alan Moore, which I really must read.

The Forever War is a good sci-fi book, the best I've ever read.

The Outsiders & Of Mice & Men are good too, if you haven't already read them.

American Psycho is a fun one, if not all that good.

Terry Pratchett is a minor diety in my house. Speak ill of him and I'll scoop each tooth out of your mouth one at a time with a spoon.

Also, for Lovecraft you'll probably want the one I got when I got into him

...where is it...hold on...

"Call of Cthulhu and other wierd tales" or something like that

I've been reading Ayn Rand recently, not only is her philosophy incredibly interesting, she's also an excellent novelist.

Last book I read was Metro 2033, and some Lovecraft short stories over the summer.

Both are pretty good.

Lovecraft is always good. I think the reason I'm all over Borges and Saki is the ultra short story thing. More ideas and smartness in 5 pages than most people have in their entire writing career.

Woo that.

And on topic, Nick Cave's book: The Life and Death of Bunny Munroe, is very good indeed, and I'd recommend picking it up, especially if you like his songwriting.

I remember reading his first (?) book "And the Ass Saw the Angel" a few years back. Was pretty good in sort of southern gothic sort of a way. His film was really good. "The Proposition." Brutal Aussie Western.

People, I think we all need to pause for a moment to appreciate this sensitive work of self-published genius:

http://amzn.to/ePt83l

Regrettably, it is presently out of print and only the contents and first page of chapter one are available via Look Inside.

This is going to be huge, people. Next Harry Potter I swear.

NECROPHILIA

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I fucking love the Timeline-191 series, cheesy, yes, little bit unimaginative, yes, but fuck me if it isn't cool as fuck.

And a song of ice and fire is great too.

Also: Anyone got any good war books to reccommend?

I'm currently reading All Hell Let Loose, Max Hastings' history of WW2. Very good indeed. Anything by Antony Beevor or Max Hastings tends to be. Catch 22 is hilarious, if that's what you're looking for.

I also stopped reading for a time there. The most recent I've read are biographies/comedies. I also read an Agatha Christie, which I never had before. Surprisingly good.

Blink - Malcolm Gladwell
Naked - David Sedaris
The Internet Is A Playground - David Thorne
Seasick - Alanna Mitchell

Usually I'm one for crime thriller as well.

Gideon - Russell Andrews
The Broken Window - Jeffery Deaver
The Dark Tide - Andrew Gross
The Beach House - James Patterson

While stuck in Kathmandu for a week I had the good fortune to stagger across this gem: Hippie Dharma

It's a thrilling no-punches-pulled "sexposé" on the Hippie Menace by Captain F.D. Colaabavala, a man who strikes me as an accidental Indian equivalent of Hunter S Thompson but with a trashier aesthetic. While going undercover on the hippie trail, he seems to continually swing between finding the hippies to be morally repugnant nihilists to going bug-eyed at naked hippie boobies and free love. Sadly, the "real life photographs" promised on the cover are, in truth, somewhat less than spectacular, being a bunch of blurry black and white shots with sensationalist captions.

I think this might be a trash masterpiece. Think mine might have been a nepalese samizdat due to all the typos, which sort of adds to the charm.

I find it hard to get into fictional stories as they are fiction.

I do much better with contemporary retelling of real events. So for example, the Danny Wallace books - each is about a mission of some kind (Reunite with all his Primary School class or say Yes to every request given), Brookers tomes comprised of his newspaper ramblings and Karl Pilkingtons Diarys.

I do read other shit, but these are books I have read to entertain myself.

I just finished reading a couple of issues of the latest Venom run.

The idea is the US military has decided to weaponise the symbiote, start a super-soldier program. They pick Eugene "Flash" Thompson, coincidentally a friend of Peter Parker's who is in the know about Spiderman, and idolises him.
Because the symbiote tends to take over people's heads, Thompson's only allowed in the suit for 48 hours at a time, and only for 20 missions. If he lets his emotions get the better of him inside the suit Venom takes over and explosives planted in his body by the gubberment blow up.
2 issues in he's already let Venom come out to play at full force, only alive because radio contact fell off during the mission and he couldn't be monitored.

It's really interesting stuff, gotta keep an eye out for more.

There's a great book called I Am Better Than Your Kids

Released recently, it's a guy who give offensive art critique to 4 year olds.

Ding Ding! Here comes the shit-mobile. I've never seen a fire truck that needed to be shaved.
I would rather be burned to death than be saved by this hairy piece of shit.

Holy shit, I almost had a seizure when I saw this one. Three words: too many colors.
