Starcraft Review

Post by Xandy on Wed Apr 13, 2011 2:29 am

-----------------------------------------------

So I recently got Starcraft: Broodwar on a USB from a friend of mine. Every Korean I know refuses to shut the fuck up about this game, and Dawn of War was being a dildo on my laptop, so I decided to play it during school instead of doing work.

Single Player

I didn't get very far in the campaign, so I don't know the plot well. I think it's just the story of Warcraft III set in the 40k-verse.

In the first mission, I started with marines and apparently had to build shit. That was a bit hard since there are no unit or building descriptions, or tutorial on how to build shit. I send my marines around and shoot some tyranids since I thought that's what I should do since they gave me so many marines. Then I found out all I needed to do was construct two buildings. Lame. tongue

In the second mission, I had a base and a marine with a bike that shot rockets. I send him to kill some tyranids and found out units can't shoot while they move (WTF?). I got tired of being told to build shit so I quit the campaign.

Afterwards I decide to see what the Broodwar campaign was like. I played as the Protoss (weird xeno dudes with magic) and quit that after killing a couple of more tyranids.

Skirmish

The skirmish mode is rather fast-paced, although that just might be because I had never played it before and didn't know what to do, but whatever. I decided to use a dozen cheats code, which made the game pretty fun. I played as Protoss and used their mind control powers to steal enemy builders and could play as every faction. It was fun for a while but then it got boring when I realized the combat was shit.

Conclusion

Very overrated. Only somewhat fun with cheat codes. I give it five out of ten scimitars.

Missed the part where you actually tell me what the game is like. Gameplay and what not. Because...I've never played Starcraft, and only know it's an RTS -- that's it.

I said the combat is bad and there's no unit descriptions. What else do you possibly want from me?

You click stuff with the mouse buttons, build shit, kill shit and collect resources. It's like every RTS ever.

I've never played an RTS before that was on PC. Only Warhammer: Battle March on the 360.

So yeah, kinda clueless. >_<

Starcraft is a difficult game. And it's not one that should be approached with the "dive right in" method. You really need to familiarize yourself with the units and what they are capable of.

Also you should never start a review with "I didn't play very far in." or some equivalent. It makes you sound like an average douchebag with a half-baked opinion. The brief nature of your review also gives this impression.

I bought Starcraft on the day it came out, actually. 1999, if I remember correctly. For Mac.

I got bored of it within about an hour and went back to playing Fallout 2. I've played it since, but I still find it very dull, and the sequel similarly. I find it just doesn't have interesting stand out things that RTS' like Dawn of War and Red Alert have, it just feels very bland overall. It's probably the best for things like tournaments and stuff, because it's very well balanced, but it never excites me.

Still, somewhat limited review. It takes a certain tone to pull of an apathetic review without coming off as slightly obnoxious. I think if you made it funnier it would work.

I like Starcraft's story, and I think it has great potential as a mythos. The fuckity fuck-up is that the emphasis is clearly on multiplayer and clearly on the tournament scene. I have to say that Starcraft has the greatest barrier to entry of any game on the market today.

That's not a good thing, IMO.

It bores me. I guess it's like Halo and Half-Life - it revolutionised the industry to such an extent that it's now the new standard and, thus, dull.
