Really though, I think she was the worst PM of the last 50 years. Her privatization binge and destruction of local industry and manufacturing got Britain into the horrible state it is today, and Ireland too, as a knock-on effect.

I hold her responsible for their being no jobs for my generation.
In the past, we would have all started in factory jobs and industrial apprenticeships and made enough money by 20 to start a family before moving into a career, now we're forced to be half-children until we're 30, interning and living out of parent's pockets until we can get a job to pay off student debts with.

It's Thatch's policies of promoting the city of London and letting manufacturing leave the country that ensured China's dominance of manufacturing and means that the western world has to find a completely new way of creating prosperity for itself.

Great job Maggie!

I doubt Britain would be much better off had there not been a Thatcher. I mean look at Britain during the 60s and 70s. Rampant inflation, constant union strikes, three day weeks, power cuts, price and income policies. Britain was already behind every other country in Europe in manifacturing and there was a consensus on economic and industrial policy that was dragging everything down even further.

You certainly shouldn't blame Thatcher for the fact that you have to live with your parents into your 30s and you can't find a job, because we have the exact same problem here in Sweden, and our unemployment is bigger than that in Britain. I believe this development is much more a cause of the rampant increase in University degree demands that are plaguing the western world. Everything requires a degree, and so everyone wastes several years after they've become 18 on studying in the university for the shittiest of things, becoming indebted before even getting a job because of the arbitrary demand from the market to have degrees for everything.

The industrial jobs exist, but next to nobody in their 20s take such jobs nowadays, because they don't feel it "represents the choices they want make in their future". Again this is caused by the University demand. Every choice you make now has to be a direct step up some sort of career ladder, and any dead end jobs on the way are ignored. Even if the economy was fine and dandy, I do not at all believe that anyone would do what you say they would back in the days, that is to get a factory job, make some money, get a house and a career. They'd get on with University degrees and student loans immediately, and it would still be just as it is now.

The absolute worst thing you can do in an economy is making it difficult for people to enter the market place, and demanding a University degree is a far more difficult hoop to make people jump through than anything Thatcher did.

Well if you have industrial jobs, any of them, then your situation is different. I think you're looking at this from a Swedish perspective. Irish and English young people really couldn't give a shit where they work or what they work at at this point.

They've consistently demonstrated that by flooding any jobs involving unskilled or semi-skilled manual labour with 10x more applications than places. There was a car widget manufacturing plant near where I live that got over 7,000 applications for 120 jobs.

That situation you told me of before where a factory opened up in Sweden offering well paid unskilled work directed at young people and barely got any actual Swedes because it didn't fit in with their lifestyle? That simply wouldn't happen in this country anymore, it's too desperate. 3 of my friends have been doggedly searching for work in Dublin, where all the remaining jobs are, for 5 months and have found nothing.

But I was wrong to lay the blame on Thatcher. She propagated an ideology but did not create it, and pretty much every western economy besides some European ones were going with the idea of extreme laissez-faire governing.

I feel it has created this awful loop in UK and Irish society where the majority of jobs are service jobs, or jobs servicing service jobs, which then service people who work in other service jobs, except for the select few who dabble in international finance.

In my mind, a country needs to produce something to be worthwhile, a country that flows entirely on the exchange of credit is dealing with something that is essentially imaginary. Unless you have some viable and tangible that a country can rely on, it's vulnerable to the lashings of the world economy.
The countries that have weathered the recession best are either those with emerging national resource stockpiles to fall back on (Norway, Australia), or large manufacturing capability (India, China, although a lot of the latter is currency manipulation as well).

I know a lot of people will disagree with me here, but I believe to truly benevolent government of the people, a country should consider its people's economic security to be as important as their physical security. Not gut the system to a shell and run the entire state for profit.

I still feel that you're ignoring the fact that Britain had a shit economy before Thatcher. But my knowledge of both Britain and Ireland is limited, so my ability to comment on this is strained as it is.

I do feel that you are greatly overestimating the worth of manufacturing and national resources when it comes to surviving economic recession, however. Plenty of countries with large national resources are f'ed in the a, and the only reason China has survived this long is because of its own increasingly unstable economic bubble. It's very selective to point to Norway, Australia and India and say "Look there, they are holding out great! It must be because they have X and we don't." Sweden and Denmark have handled it pretty well too, but we don't have the resources of Norway. Hell, Denmark is just a half-island made of sand. And India is seeing massive growth because of its increasingly free economy, which started freeing up way before the recession. And Hong Kong is doing pretty well, even though it has no natural resources.

But what other solutions are there to massive global credit problems? Austerity isn't producing any results. Maybe it'll make life easier in 30 years or so but at the moment it's doing nothing but causing more stagnation. I'd support the Keynesian method myself, although I know you wouldn't. Less cuts and more money to public services, invest in the people, all that.

But even that's not tested, the only time it really worked was the Marshall plan, when the US was at the very top of its game and had the resources to bail out all of Europe. There's not that much free cash flowing around these days, and they of course didn't have the degree problem.

Really though, manufacturing and national resources are just part of the whole concept of national autonomy. The current idea is that nations are essentially open rooms for multinationals and financiers to conduct business in, with both moving at will to whichever country is most attractive to them, and the main goal of nations is to make themselves attractive for said companies and banks.

Personally I admire the way Qatar is working. They're sitting on huge national resources but they're putting a large chunk into education and scientific funding, because they know that in 50 years there isn't going to be any oil left and they need a resource, whatever that is.

That's my main problem with the ideology Thatcher promoted, it's far too much about money and not enough about people.

Resources and factories are just peripheral, the main goal is to use the money generated from them to provide a high standard of living for the people of the state and leave them well educated, healthy, and with plenty of opportunities. It means losing money in the short term but gaining it in the long term as well as investing in something that can't be wiped out by recession.

And yes, you are right, Thatcher inherited many of her problems from her predecessors. Although a lot of those problems, especially the 3 day week and power cuts were both fallout of the 1973 Arab oil crisis, which Britain couldn't have stopped no matter what its ideology. That was totally an American blunder.

I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable on Thatcher's policies as you two are and feel free to call me out if I'm talking a load of shit.

But as I understand it, Britain was in a shitty economic state at the time and she wanted to transfer to a service based economy from a manufacturing/resource extraction based one, knowing that as countries like India and China were up and coming industrial powerhouses and that western workers wouldn't be able to keep up with them unless they lowered their standard of working conditions and wages.

Were her policies ideal? No, Did they cause economic problems? Definitely, Would Britain have been worse off if she hadn't done what she did? I'm not certain, but I believe so.

I believe this because my part of Canada (Atlantic) is poor and shitty, and was in a similar state to what North England was. We were entirely based on resource extraction and manufacturing related to that (Coal, Timber/Paper, Steel, Fishing, Oil refining) and every single one of those industries collapsed about 30 years ago because we never made the transition to a service based economy like the other, more prosperous parts of the country and kept the industral economy model up until the last minute, we starting building an ark to save us while the storm was already in full swing while the rest of the country was already floating and sailing away, and we're still broke because of that.

A good way to solve massive global credit problems is to not have such problems in the first place. So no government that creates an artificial housing bubble that collapses everything and no bloody Euro that ties everyone's problems up with shitty countries that hide their financial instabilities in order to apply for membership.

And the Keynesian method doesn't work. We don't need more spending, we need growth, and real growth comes from production that seeks to meet the demand of the people. When the government spends money to get production going, they are artificially creating demand that in reality isn't there, and in the end it only makes the economy worse off. Look at China with their ghost towns. Sure the government is spending money and creating jobs, but it's not a good investment in the future because the demand is artificial and so it'll be a massive burden on the economy in the future.

And the Marshal plan only "worked" because it wasn't really necessary. It wasn't as much a "Hey Europe I'm bailing you out" as a "Hey guys, see how much better a friend I am than the Soviet Union?" Sure a lot of countries in Europe had it tough after the war, but the Marshal plan wasn't necessary. Ludwig Erhard was far more important for the economic recovery of Europe than the Marshal plan.

I don't find anything wrong with the current idea, either. Recently there was a big scandal where it turned out that Facebook wasn't paying as much taxes to the Swedish government as other Sweden based companies, because they were based in Ireland. I said "So what? Ireland is being competitive and are seeing financial gain by having incentivised Facebook to have their European office there. Good for them!" It's a good system because it incentivises all countries to become more friendly towards businesses, and a side-effect of that is that small businesses can thrive, and that increases production and all national economies experience growth.

I find Thatcher's ideology to be all about people. History has shown that the absolute best way to lift people out of poverty and give them good education and income is by having a growing economy. The best way to help people is to give them the means to help themselves, i.e. provide a strong economy in which they can thrive. That's why Pinochet's Chile grew to become much better off than Allende's Chile, or Chavez' Venezuela, even though the latter two where all about the people. That's why people escape from mainland China into Hong Kong. The side effect of economic growth is that everyone is better off. A rising tide lifts all boats, as JFK said.

@Karth: I believe you are correct. The worker unions of Britain were making demands that would cripple the entire British industry, they wanted more money and benefits at a time when British industry was being worth less and less money, and hadn't Thatcher crushed them the industry would either have collapsed as massive strikes took place, or the country would have eventually collapsed as it met the demands that it couldn't really meet.

Everyone hates on Thatcher and Reagan for how they treated the unions, but had it not been for them the entire country would have been much worse off.

All I know is we are not getting a bank holiday because she didn't want a full state funeral. Selfish or what.

You have won, too tired to argue.

I can't throw myself into political debates like I could, at least not online.

Regardless of her economic policies (which I'm not a fan of) she was still a cunt of a woman. Was given a drink by my brother to celebrate her death, he fucking despises her.

Sums up Scotland's view of her.

Jeeesus christ.

Anyone remember that asshole I once talked about who got caught on camera robbing a dude and then leaving him to get crushed by a train? Turns out he's a wanted murderer in France! That sob story he pulled about his legs being hurt and needing to rob people for medicine? His legs got that way when he jumped of a balcony running from the police after his crime! This guy is a mayor bastard, a cunt to the first degree, and when he's done serving his sentence her in Sweden he's being extradited to France where he'll be trialed for murder.

Oh lord it feels good

Proof the Sun has always been as poetic and nuanced in its subtle dissections of societal issues as it is now.
