I have a feeling this might be the catalyst for a change in the law. There's never been a death before, and there was a lot of debate about it before she died.

Hopefully we can eventually catch up to the rest of the civilized world. Poor woman.

So apparently one of the first things the state of Israel did after killing the head of Hamas was to post aerial footage of his death on Youtube. They're fucking insane.

Train Guard is jailed for 5 years after a drunk girl on M-cat falls under a train that he signalled to move.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20348085

Fucking pathetic. Jailing him will not do anything, it won't bring the girl back and his life is now destroyed.

When the chips are down, she was out of control and stupid. Accidental death and he's paying for it hard. Prison is a detterant for criminal activities, not a punishment for supposedly neglectful mistakes.

So if I've got this straight, she was leaning against the train, fully conscious, and fell in under the train and died when the guard told the driver that it was clear to go under the pretense that she would stop leaning against the train when it started moving.

I would have done the exact same thing. It's only logical to think that if you start moving the train, someone who is leaning on it will fucking stop leaning on it.

I don't think anyone in the entire world would answer the question "What would happen if a girl is leaning on a train with her hands and the driver starts moving the train?" with "She falls in under the train and dies." They'd answer "The cunt stops leaning on the train."

I agree 100%. I would have done the same.

Now some poor sap has been imprisoned. Worst part is that all he's basically a fall guy. The friends and family refuse to acknowledge that the girl is to blame and have shifted onto some poor fella who made an arguably bad call. It's the lack of backbone and responsibility, possibly because she's dead and we must never speak ill of them!

It gets worse though. The parents response to facts that the girl was fucking pissed off her head (3 times over the limit) and on drugs was "Kids do that stuff, nothing we could of done" . Infact, whenever drugs are mentioned, people defending her parrot that the train guard had been arrested in 2009 for a cannabis offence "MAYBE HE WAS HIGH AT THE TIME EH" That's fucking bollocks and they know it is.

The girl should have been cared for and sent home by her responsible "adult" friends when she fell down a flight of damn stairs at pre drinks.

The whole case stinks of bias.

You all make a fair argument and whilst the sentence is outrageous, you have to kind of admit that is exactly his job. He is responsible for ensuring the train can leave safely without endangering anyone and you can't deny that in this case, he failed in that respect.

His sentence has been completely inappropriate though.

To be honest, the family were probably hunting some sort of pay-off. I can't understand why else they would be willing to hear their daughter be criticised by the prosecution and public alike, whilst being willing to completely destroy the life of another individual.

So the Economist tells me that if France don't get it's sh*t together it'll be a bigger bust in the Eurozone than Greece was/is/will be

It highlights this on the front cover with a fuse running into a bundle of dynamite where the dynaminte is replaced with baguettes.

I just love how France has so many cultural images you can Frenchify ANYTHING

I was never keen on the EU until I found out quite a few historians and other figures have made the point that actually the EU is the ancestor of Briand and Stresseman's original plan for an union of European states economically integrated, so that none have an incentive to declare war on one another.

And in that sense, I think the EU has definitely succeeded. Consider, the bitter hatred between many states following the Great War and which only intensified over the thirties. Nowadays, it seems ridiculous that any state within the EU would even consider declaring war on one of its compatriots.

I don't mind the original principle of the European coal and steel pact, Europe advancing its own interests and cooperating is all okay, but not as a federal state.

@Wiggles: I wouldn't give the EU the credit for that, at least not entirely. To me the peace between the European countries has been a natural development without any help from the EU. Look at history after WW2. The Cold War united most of the Western Block, people stopped fearing Germany because now it was a victim that sympathized with the western cause, in time the mutually beneficial cooperation brought forth by the cold war turned into actual positive public relations, and when the Soviet Union collapsed we were all happy to embrace the newly freed Eastern Block countries as friends who could enjoy sweet, sweet capitalism.

From how I see it it was only natural that the countries of Europe become more peaceful towards each other. The culture of war and imperialism was disappearing and there was a stronger sense of unity towards a common foe. We didn't need no EU for that

You make a strong point but no one can say for sure why peace has prospered. If anything, I see it as a combination of the above and the work of the EU. Stating that the EU had no or little impact seems too great an assumption for me to agree wholeheartedly.

Tom Hardy might be playing Sam Fisher in the upcoming Splinter Cell film.

For me it is a definite no.

If he is cast as Sam Fisher, then this may detract from him dominating the Mad Max sequel. Then again, that's either just finished or just started filming so he could do both.... possibly.
