I honestly can't understand the logic who complain about the Hobbit having utilized 48fps.

Apparently, Tolkien JR was hated on him but I can't remember why.

To quote someone in the comments section of that article:

This is stupid. No one's work has been "eviscerated." My copies of The Hobbit and LOTR are still sitting on my bookshelf, perfect and unmolested from cover to cover. Film adaptations do not cause the original books to cease to exist nor do them any harm whatsoever.

I dunno about 48fps, maybe it's because I'm so used to 30 or whatever it is but when you up the frame rate on live-action stuff it looks really off. Like it's a news program or The Bill.

Still haven't seen The Hobbit though.

That pretty much is the reason why people find it unappealing. Moviegoers are so used to seeing Hollywood slap up blurry 24fps footage that when something like the Hobbit uses finer and more clear footage, it appears odd. The problem is that people are so used to seeing shitty, ugly blurry images at the cinema.

Critics who claim using increased fps is somehow inherently bad are fucking idiots. If more films used 48fps, everyone would get used to it overtime.

@JRRTolkien: I agree with Xandus' thing about adaptations but that thing in the article about Jackson conning the Tolkien estate out of profits was very nasty indeed, if true. Makes me dislike the films even more, although I remain open to seeing the Hobbit. Mainly for Martin Freeman.

@Toliken: My impression was that Tolkien JR sold the rights for £100,000 back in the seventies, only to see his father's legacy turn into a billion dollar business which he had sold his claim to.

He tried to sue the film company (New Line Cinema, I think) and they opted to settle out of court. Probably because a) It seemed unfair that he had made so little out of his inherited works and b) They didn't want to be the company who had refused to share their wealth with the 83 yr old former owner of the content.

Maybe I read it wrong, but was there not a clause in the contract that the Tolkien estate was entitled to a cut of the profits for the films, and then they were told that the films weren't profitable?

I suppose that's very true. I'm just used to hearing about greedy rights holders who gave up their share or didn't contest for anything and then challenge the people who actually do something with the rights in question.

Yes, I am referring to the whole Thunderball situation. My irrational hate of people who have previously sold rights doesn't really apply here.

I'd kind of agree with you there. They were presented a clear choice and they took it. Gambling on things like that is just part of life, and they went for the money up front.

Gonna get stoned and watch a war movie tonight.

Anyone know if that Korean move My Way is any good? It seems similar to Tae Guk Gi and I fucking love that film.

>Korean bloke gets conscripted into the Japanese army in WW2
>Gets captured in Siberia by the Soviets, sent to fight as cannon fodder in Stalingrad.
>Gets captured by the Germans and pressed into a Wehrmacht labour batallion
>Gets captured by the Americans on D-Day

Poor fucker.

@Kharloth: I thought Brest Fortress had that typically Russian problem where all the acting is hammy as fuck and go on about a lot of irrelevant bullshit before the fighting starts. When the fighting starts, it's great.

Although a lot of modern war films have this problem. I just want to see a good stripped down war film, like the first hour of Assembly, as opposed to the maudlin second half. Characterization, sure, but in real life, fighting is the main thing that soldiers do. We don't need wacky characters, deep interpersonal relationships or Jude Fucking Law falling in love.

The only film I watched recently that was like that was Contact, which I think I posted earlier, a film about Northern Ireland by the guy who directed Scum.

I noticed that too, especially in foreign film. The technology and action scenes are top notch, but the acting comes from a 80s action flick.

I fucking loved the action scenes in Tae Guk Gi but the story was a bit overly dramatic as the acting was hammy.

Watched Spartacus, it was certainly old school with some great set pieces. I did enjoy it but Kubrick really didn't shine through the material.

Yeah, that was his 'directing films for other people' phase. Of those films before Dr Strangelove my favourite is Paths of Glory. Lolita is refreshingly weird as well.

Re: General Film and TV Thread.

There's this bit in the first episode where the stereotypical "Smart guy who joins the infantry because it's REAL" starts talking about "But yet, there's a certain type of glory..." in a webcam conversation with his wife, and that's where I knew it was a pile of shit. Difficult to explain.

Also, all the female characters are horrible. The two women in the squad are A. Black and B. White trash, with very little other to define them. (Also, they're in a logistics company supporting the squad, but the series always comes up with convoluted ways to get them into combat every episode, political correctness and all. If the actual military doesn't put women in front line combat positions, don't distort the facts.)

The women on base (Yes, it focuses on their families) almost all sleep around. All the characters can be summed up in one sentence. Rest assured, there is no Fruity Rudy here.

And it's not that it's pro or anti-war either. Generation Kill had a bit of both, they perform well and enjoy their job but they're powerless to stop the country falling apart around them after they win. In this, insurgents are insurgents, they don't say if they're Shia or Sunni, ex-Baathist or anything. They have no collective personality other than something to shoot at.

None of the squad's missions seem to fit into anything useful in stopping an insurgency, it's just go to a village and shoot shit up.

I hate it I hate it I hate it.

I watched Generation Kill and think I'd like to read the book.

I didn't really enjoy it all that much.

I think it's the best war series out there (I like but not love Band of Brothers), but it's not all that it could be.

If anyone knows of any other better war series (There was one about PMC's in Iraq starring Stephen Graham and James Nesbitt that was pretty good), I'm all ears.
