Splinter Cell in Taliban land

Post by Hubilub on Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:33 pm

I honestly thought I had been dreaming this one.

This concept just sits wrong with me. I really don't like the idea of being in the middle east doing sneaky sneaky missions. A lot of it is because it's so overused with middle east settings. I'm damn tired of them. Chaos Theory had you do a bunch of stealther wet-dreams: Break into a bank, infiltrate a government building to steal secret information, sneak into a nuke-sub, sneak onto a freighter. Level diversity on par with Hitman Blood Money.

Not to mention that we've already had middle eastern missions in Double Agent. Why can't we just do it Cold War style and have a bunch of different settings across the entire world against an enemy with endless resources and influence everywhere instead of terrorists hiding in grottos and little villages?

Agreed, there's places just as interesting but seldom explored.

>The Balkans
>South east Asia
>Eastern Europe, aside from Russia all the time.
>South and Central America
>India

Quite surprised they didn't go the route of making you play as his dad or something during ww2 because Sam's dad would also be a super spy.

I just don't understand why they can't invent threats for Sam to tackle anymore. In Chaos Theory Japan started a fictional defense department trying to start a war between China and the western powers, in Double Agent you were infiltrating a fictitious terrorist organization, in Recently-shaved-hobo-Sam you combated another fictitious terrorist organization trying to take over America.

Why can't we have a plot where Ban Ki-Moon tries to coerce the nations of the UN to fund a space-program so that he can set up missile-bases ON THE MOOOOON to bomb North Korea?

Even if they only want to take on Islamic terrorism, then there's Somalia, Mali, The Philippines, Indonesia, Chechnya and West China that are all outside the middle east and currently have militants operating in them. All are very diverse.

Wow, that's really lame.
I kind of don't want to play conviction now.
This is a really stupic idea.
It worked in Metal Gear Solid, but only because they made it fantastically interesting.

This setting just won't fit in Splinter Cell.

I still recall the moment I said "fuck you" at Splinter Cell Conviction.

The mission where they take away all silent missions, give you an AK47 and tell you to fight through the fucking taliban. That was like level 3 or 4.

Conviction was basically 24: the game.

Give me another Chaos Theory (Without the chewing gum product placement) damnit. I loved the chinese retreat level. Cutting through paper walls was a sign of progress in games. The fucking NY level too! And the boat assasination! Fuck. I love Splinter Cell.

I will always remember that moment in Pandora when, after a long escort mission of an unarmed muslim woman, you jump in a lift she shows yous. As you descend you get an urgent transmission from HQ and they order you to murder the lady. You get about 4 seconds to kill her and afterwards Michael Ironside commits real emotion to either choice.

KILL HER

"Tell me what I just did Lambert."
"The right thing. Hard work but it had to happen"
"Killing unarmed women seems mighty close to terrorism"
"Shut up Fisher. Leave the ethics to us."

LET HER LIVE
"Damnit Fisher. We needed her dead"
"Why?"
"It's not your job to question"
"I'm going to need a little more warning to shoot unarmed women. Are we aborting the mission?"
"No, we can't. But you just dug yourself a deep pit to climb out of"

There's also an unmarked bit similar in Chaos Theory, where you are tasked to destroy a downed US helicopter in Korea. HQ says the pilots are more or less dead and you don't have enough time to save them. It sounds like flavour VO, but if you pull every member of the crew out the wreckage and put them far away safely, you're given a little bonus Codec thing that really struck me.

(After saving one pilot)
Lamert: There, Fisher, he's safe. Call in the strike.
Sam: There's no point in saving just one.
(After saving the second pilot)
Lamert: Fisher, you don't exist. You won't get a medal for this.
Sam: Medals don't help me sleep at night, Lambert.

I also remember the Live Action advert for the first game that inspired me to buy the game.

Fuck, why they spoil like, one of my favourite franchises?

Would you believe that reading that was literally the first time I realized it was Michael Ironside who played Sam Fisher, after I've been playing Splinter Cell since the first one and watching Michael Ironside since Scanners.

The stuff that goes over my head sometimes.

You know they shafted him for Taliban Fight with Sam Fisher?

Basically, because you HAVE to mocap act everything these days, they think that just because Ironside is out of shape and a retired old man he shouldn't voice the character because he can't ACT the physical shit.

Fuck off Ubisoft. Replacing Ironsides rich throaty voice with a young american shithead.

Because he can't do Mocap backflips and shit to appeal to kool kidz.

He doesn't even need to do that shit. Most of the craptors they pull in would be mesmerized by Ironside. Even Adam Jensons voice actor said he's the best guy to work with on Vidya's.

So annoyed with it. Another nail in coffin I guess. Need a HD update of Chaos Theory though.

Oh man I remember when me and my friend played the Chaos Theory co-op and we got to that scene where Sam interrogates the North Korean soldier. That was a fun... can you call it easter egg? Cameo? Either way it was great.

@Henners: I bought the HD Chaos Theory. It's so worth it. And the game is so sexy! You don't even notice that the graphics are from the PS2. Guess that's what you get when the game is mostly in darkness.

And fuck modern graphics and technology in gaming, Ironside is more important!

Why oh why must so many game franchises change so much from the original formula? Max Payne 3 was good, but it was hardly Max Payne, Devil May Cry is about a pathetic punk kid with a pottymouth, Splinter Cell HAS NO IRONSIDE NOOO, Fallout 4 is going to be set in Russia (AJM JUST KEEEDIIING). Some of the things I've been the most excited for have needlessly changed some of the most fun parts of the games.

@Furb: Hitman Absolution still looks kinda shite.

I keep holding on to the theory that a staggeringly small amount of developers actually understand what it is that make their games good. Either that or pressure from their production companies are keeping them from actually pursuing the game they want and they have to keep a straight face during developer diaries or else they get fired.
