Underrated Heroes?

Post by Xandy on Thu May 31, 2012 5:22 pm

What are some underrated heroes of your nation? Canada's got a lot of national heroes who we tend to forget about, mostly because we don't glorify them as much as the States, but one of our most unappreciated is Sir Samuel Steele.

Facts about Samuel Steele:

- he had a fucking cool name
- he was involved in every Canadian military conflict since the country's founding up until his death, his daddy also fought in the Napoleonic Wars
- fought in the Fenian Raids when he was 18
- was going to fight in the Red River Rebellion but the Metis surrendered before any shots could be fired
- became the most famous Mounty ever and kicked ass in the North-West Rebellion
- protected our gold in the Yukon from American prospectors
- fought in the Boer War
- despite being fucking old, he demanded that he be allowed to fight in the First World War
- was considered being made commander of all Canadian forces in Europe
- became a knight

I was reading the other day in a very old history book about a man called Myles "The Slasher" O'Rourke, who held off Cromwells forces for 24 hours on a bridge over the river Inny with a greatsword in 1650. When they finally cut him down he had taken 90 roundheads with him. You can see the bridge where he did it from the end of my road.

And of course, my great-grandfather, Joe Nangle, who rescued the high ranking officers of the IRA in the West of Ireland as they prayed in a church in Drunshambo.
He ran all the way from Carrick-On-Shannon (20 miles), beating a British convoy who had been tipped off about the church to there, warned the IRA guys, who ambushed the convoy at Sheemore and killed 20 of them, my great-grandfather being responsible for 12 of those. The only loss his side took was the loss of his brothers ear.

To escape a British reprisal he and a comrade hid under an English truck, expecting it to stop in the next town, instead it carried them all the way to Dublin without stopping, a journey of 100 miles under the truck. Somehow, they made it, staggered out of a British army barracks without being caught and after a stiff drink of whiskey, both reported to the nearest IRA cell and carried on the war in Dublin.

He was later savagely tortured to death by Free State troops during the civil war 2 years later.

All that information comes from my mothers cousin, who's a historian.

I'd like to point out that that was the Brits fault and that Australians did remarkably well in the European theater when it came to taking trenches.

This is true.

But the Germans nicknamed us "The Empire's Stormtroopers"

Point of interest; apparently a while ago Samuel Steele's own documents were being delivered to a place in Britain. The British government had the roads along the way temporarily closed down, because they believed it was very important the hero's documents were delivered safety.

Meanwhile 95% of Canadians don't know a thing about him.

Christopher Lee, 'nuff said.

When Peter Jackson told Christopher how to act in a (deleted) scene where Saruman was stabbed in the back, Christopher said "No, that's not what it sounds like when you stab someone in the back"
"What does it sound like?" asks Jackson
Christopher then explains exactly how it sounds to stab someone in the back.

He also has an amazing voice, was a vampire and speaks eleventy-billion languages. He reads the Lord of the Rings once a year every year.
