@Cuth: See, if I bought the PS3 version (don't have a 360) it'd probably be on one disk. The large capacity of Blue ray has fucked me over for once!

Besides, the baby is (as the main character calls it) a "nocturnal air raid siren that goes off every fucking night like it's pearl harbour".

So it's cool.

Went out for a drink with the guy who is leaving my work today. Not the worst thing in the world to have a guiness before 4:30 in the afternoon. Now I'm off out for more drinks.

Never had so much money this far into a month. Time to spend spend spend.

Re: Things you did today

Post by Furburt on Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:02 pm

Back from 5 days working on a dance festival. This one, to be precise. 4 17 hour days in a row, up at 7 and at bed by 12. I was mainly on the curtains, but I set up the place too.
I'm incredibly tired, so when my energy comes back to me remind me to tell you all the insane stories, including one about this absolute bitch my mother used to do drama workshops and festivals with who was always trying to undermine her, then learning that her grandfather was part of an SS sniper squad in charge of bumping off prominent partisans in Yugoslavia. Apparently he had Tito in his sights but he moved before he could take the shot. Bizarre.

He then came to Ireland and started Iralco, the single biggest employer in my area that makes car parts for BMW and the like and which is about 15 minutes drive from me. He suffered a head injury and apparently went completely insane, charging his employees with a sword and setting rubbish on fire at random.
It makes so much sense that that bitch of a woman who worked with us is descended from Nazis.

And then, I discovered that her cousin, this guys grand-nephew, was this fucker called Soren who I used to get into fights with in school (And always lost, because he was huge). Apparently there's this fairly big community of expatriate Germans around here all descended from SS officers who fled. Demented, it's like Argentina or something.

Anyway, too tired for more. Still, feeling pretty good, and my ass got paid, so it's all smooth.

Nope, all arty people and acrobatics and the like. We had loads of people from other countries, South Africans, Slovakians, Faroe Islanders (They were very annoying) and Germans. I reckon a few of the dancers were probably on speed to keep their weight down but altogether it was fairly respectable.

In all fairness, everyone calls him Benito despite the fact his name is Vladislav because he looks completely Italian and is hilariously lecherous towards the girl dancers, so he's not full Slovak.

Then my mother asked me why don't I open my own, and then I realized what I want to do for the rest of my life.

Re: Things you did today

Post by Furburt on Mon Apr 16, 2012 9:16 am

I love working at dance festivals and showings because when you get a bunch of international artists together things get very strange very fast. Last week I got to live with them for a week as well, in a dairy farm in Longford converted into a dance school.

Fun things about last week at the Longford Dance Festival which I will not explain very well (All these happened).

1. Delivering wood to old people.

2. The stunt pilot who decided to fly at a height of oh, about 100 FUCKING FEET above me in a brand new German plane that's apparently designed to be flown unstably causing me to jump in a ditch. He does this because he's neighbours with the people I was staying with and they hate each other. I thought it was a model plane before it SWOOPED

3. The German acapella singer who sang with Bobby McFerrin telling me that Milkys picture of me on facebook was an amazing representation of me.

4. Aforementioned Nazi story.

5. Having learned that last time I was there, I dined with and spoke to a now convicted paedophile.

6. The Faroe islander fishermen-turned-dancer troupe that put on a completely incomprehensible show about inbreeding and fishing that ended with everyone totally naked. And them taking 9 HOURS to set up the lights during rehearsals when it should have taken an hour, maximum.

7. Jens, the ridiculously pretentious musician/artist for that show, whose main music was saying "There once was a girl" into a vocoder over and over again while his troupe-mates undressed and attached themselves to pulleys while screaming in Danish. I grew to hate him.

8. The complete technical failure of the start of that show (The last in the evening, starting at 10pm after starting at 9.30am) when, after changing the entire layout of the set in 4 minutes (it's supposed to take about 30 minutes) and waiting,
and waiting for the Faroese to set up their buckets and ladders and levers, and waiting for Jens to set up a seemingly endless amount of synthesizers did our lighting engineer start screaming FUCK into my intercom headphones so loud that I could hear him from the other side of the auditorium (which means the audience could too).
He had had a lighting desk crash with 14 seconds left to go before I open the curtains, which is an incredibly rare and terrible thing to happen, and could take hours to rectify, when we had less than 10 seconds.

I then turned to the Faroese guy next to me with the big beard, woolly jumper and wellington boots (That's how he dressed all the time) with the completely unpronounceable name (I think, think, that it sounded something like Shenshun, but I couldn't be sure) and informed him that we had no lights but that we were going ahead anyway, I said the same to Jens the musician and the completely naked woman onstage.

For the first 5 minutes of the show, we had one bright glaring spotlight and that's all, not even highlighting the action, until the sound engineer and lighting engineer (I was stage manager, which means I wear headphones and pull curtains and tell people they have 5 minutes and shit like that) figured out an ingenious solution, that required them to hack into the computer powering the lighting desk (It was linux, I don't pretend to understand) and manually inputting each lighting parameter on the fly, while having to remember totally the lighting pattern the Faroese had wanted (And their show was about an hour long, most dance pieces are 15 minutes). And when I say hack, I mean they actually had to put shit in like /setlights 100 061 13S in. That was the only one I could remember, because it's the simplest.

They also had to remember what all the numbers of the lights were (Out of 200), which occasionally required me to very quietly whisper into the intercom what light number was which. In the end, the show was so weird I don't think anyone noticed, they just thought the slightly odd lights were part of it.

9. The curtains jamming on every single pull no matter how many times I climbed the rigging and sprayed WD-40 on the mechanism or rejiggered it or even took it apart and put it back together again. This meant I had to predict at which point the curtain would jam and jump high in the air and pull down on the curtain with all my weight to keep the movement smooth but still landing completely quietly. I think I did alright, considering.

10. Meeting @Unables cousin, singing Raglan Road while he played Mandolin, and seeing that he is actually a fucking good dancer. He was the lead in a piece where he played a corpse who came to life while girls dressed up gothically pounded the ground around him. It was all set to Bjork.

11. Having at least 50 17 year old dancers around me at any given time. Sadly, the girl who put on her play last year who I fell completely in love with wasn't there, she's on tour in Berlin. Maybe next year.

Finally got all 6 Star Wars films. So I can finally see those.

Also got Strange Wilderness, because that shark scene is hilarious (and that's all I've seen of it, and I think Hub requested I review it).

Oh yeah, I also watched the Nic Cage Wicker Man before going to bed last night.

I also bought Rollerball (the remake), Dirty Pretty Things, Collateral, Slither, Stealing Time, and Traffic.

So a good mixture of probably good and sure-to-be-junk films.

And before anyone asks why I bought the Rollerball remake, it was because the 2.8 IMDb rating was too hard to pass up.

I've only seen one scene from the original rolleball, it's the ending bit, it's pretty cool.

A fun, kinda bad film is Death race 2000. It has nudity, violence and Slyvester Stallone driving this.
