Mass Effect 3

Post by LordCuthberton on Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:19 am

So yeah, thought I'd be pre-emptive and make a thread now.

So I just preordered the silly super special collectors ultimate edition or whatever and I gather everyone else here will probably play it at some point.

SO WHO'S EXCITED FOR THE MULTIPLAYER?!

Wow, I didn't even know there would be multiplayer.

I think I'll probably have to ACQUIRE BY OTHER MEANS it because I have a no tolerance policy on Origin. I might do my thing where I send them €40 in the mail, although knowing EA, they'd probably arrest me for that.

Still, regardless of all the shaky details coming out, I still think it'll most likely be excellent.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Post by LordCuthberton on Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:22 pm

I was tempted to call the thread "Mass Effect 3...but mostly Origin" but I decided against it. It's bit shit how you PC guys sort of get a little screwed over when big company's think big ideas.

And yeah, I cannot wait. There's a demo coming soon I think.

And sadly yeah, there is multiplayer. It seems every game wants a CoD fanbase. Heck, Crysis 2 decided to basically copy and paste CoD multiplayer - right down to the 3,5,7 kill streak layout. I think ME3's mode is like a Horde wave mode though so it could be entertaining.

Also, they decided to do an interesting thing in regards to achievements. There are multiplayer achievements, but they are joint with single player....for example:

Enlisted (5) - Start a character in multiplayer or customize a character in single-player.

Almost There (15) - Reach level 15 in multiplayer or level 50 in single-player.

So at least they are not forcing any completionists to play multiplayer.

I'm sure it'll be fun, but I probably won't play it, mainly because my multiplayer tastes are very specific, and also because if I do go through with my plan, I'll have to use hamachi and underground servers and all that nonsense.

I'm just excited for the return of the RPG elements.

Perhaps I'll do another misogynist run.

Do it now man.

I went into town today and the 3 big games retailers had sold out of special editions.

Thankfully I got one from GAME online.

Much more excited for Max Payne 3. Fucking bitching fan boys. I loved the first two like crazy, I love film noir as a genre, but this game still looks amazing. All the noir/hong kong influences are clearly still there, it's just sunny now.

As long as he looks like Max Payne, and shit gets shot to fuck, it's Max Payne.

Must play Alan Wake when it goes PC.

After an hour or so of heavy discussion over the entire Mass Effect series with Furburt, I have done a complete 180. I no longer think Mass Effect 3 is going to live up to the expectations. I think it's going to be playing it safe, following the exact same predictable structure as so many other Bioware games, and it's going to be generally underwhelming.

Re: Mass Effect 3

Post by Furburt on Mon Feb 27, 2012 3:37 pm

Allow me to elaborate slightly. Bereft of anything else to do, me and Ben played the Mass Effect 3 demo, then looked up things about Mass Effect 3, then played Mass Effect 2 again, for comparison. Mass Effect 3 just seems less distinctive, the colour scheme isn't as engaging as the second, the combat feels much less weighty and homing biotics are way too powerful.
The animation is much stranger looking too.

That's the technical problems, but the essence of the problem is a bit harder to get at. Little things like all the reapers looking the same, the lack of puzzle minigames, the false sense of scale that the first and second didn't really resort to. The child thing that Henry mentioned I found a bit exploitative, it didn't draw me in, and didn't make me feel anything.
There was an underlying sense that they were simply going to repeat the successes of the past games rather than truly innovate. A small example would be that at the end of the first mission Shepard does his big jump onto the cargo bay of the Normandy, which he only did twice in ME2, once at the end and once in one of the DLC's. I wouldn't be surprised if he does that quite a few times in ME3.

Now, I hope to be proved wrong, and all this may just be due to the fact that me and Ben complain about everything when we're together, but we played through it a few times to strengthen our convictions, and we agreed that it just doesn't feel right. Hopefully it's just a bad demo.

They didn't exactly pick the best second level in the demo. That annoyed me.

However, I was happy about the lack of minigames. The matching symbols thing in 2 was not a puzzle, it was just annoying.

And I understand your view and all I can say is that only time will tell.

The lack of minigames wouldn't be as bad if it wasn't for the fact that you still have to unlock doors. If you're going to have doors you need to unlock, it's better to have a minigame that keeps the player active in the game rather than simply having to stare at Shepard for 5 seconds while she unlocks it.

Other things that annoyed me:

They're completely phoning it in with the husks. In the first game the husks weren't main enemies, just the horrible results of what happen to people when they get in the hands of the Reapers.

In Mass Effect 2 husks were completely useless from a story perspective as collectors needed the humans for their self-made Reaper and therefore didn't need husks.

But in 3, all the Reapers seem to have in their command are husks. Normal husks, husks that use assault rifles, husks that fly.

And I ask, where the hell did they get these? If they've been in dark space for fucking 50.000 years, why would they have husks with them? Did they keep them hibernated for that fucking long? How do they have modern weapons if the reapers just arrived? How is it a good strategy to deploy such bulky, clumsy and stupid looking enemies? From a developer perspective, how is this an intimidating enemy?

There are so many more dramatic and menacing ways that the Reapers can use to attack the galaxy. It's so underwhelming to have the two first games be about how it just takes one fucking Reaper to wreck a lot of shit, and then have the third game reduce the Reapers to big-thing-with-laser.

What else can we have as cannon fodder? Apart from Cereberus (Which I'm confused about. Aren't they against like, total annihilation...?)
