I didn't get to watch it fully, but it's damn damn good. A bit racist and sympathetic to the white colonists and fairly brutal (one part where they were flying over some in-progress killing fields in the Zanzibar revolution where several thousand Arabs were massacred).

I say give it a look.

NOOOOO.

Which reminds me, I love the scene where that cunt reveals that Samuel L. Jackson lied about finding the Captain America pictures in the fanboy's jacket. It was yet another great way of building to his character: He is willing to act amorally if it means that his team will fight evil.

(Btw, did you know that Shawarma sales have been skyrocketing since the film came out? I feel like a hipster for being the only one who knew about shawarma before!)
Man, I was talking about how much I wanted some shawarma last night. Mispronounced it hilariously and got mocked by a room full of very stoned people.

I still want some fucking shawarma.

Just watched Driver. Hated it

-Awful completely robot like acting from pretty much everyone, hell the protagonist's conversations consist entirely of mono-syllable answers to questions throughout 90% of the movie

"So what do you do?"

"Drive"

"Like for movies?"

"Yeah"

BRILLIANT

-Abysmal soundtrack consisting entirely of synthesized electronic sounding bullshit that it blares every third fucking scene.

-Almost no action, there are a total of maybe 6 onscreen deaths in the movie, almost all of which occur in the last 20 minutes.

-Uninteresting plot with almost no character development, most of the movie is just useless, mind-numbingly boring fluff.

-Only two driving scenes that are somewhat entertaining and exciting, everything else is him just casually ferrying people and things around.

-Empty, soulless, emotionless husk that tries to compensate by being all artsy and pretending to have more depth than it actually does.

So yep, terrible film, would not reccommend.

@Kharloth: rageiscontemptable

I 100% disagree.

---

End of the day it's a B-movie with a budget. It has a B-movie plot, over the top exploitational violence and Ron Pearlman.

It's brilliant. It's a B-Movie with an arthouse edge. Gosling plays a driver that is eerily similar to THE Taxi Driver, borderline psychotic but mute. But he's in no way the star. The star of the film is it's supporting cast.

Albert Brooks plays against type and manages to come across as a very dark character, Pearlman plays a typical Pearlman role - angry older guy who's violent but buffoonish. Bryan Cranston comes across as a dirty but friendly dealer, Christina Hendricks is an audience surrogate - reacting as any of us would to the escalating violence. All these performances only serve to have Gosling react to them in his silent bemusement/fear/anger/ect.

Gosling does not do very much, but does that very well.

This would be my, and my fathers, main problem with the film, not so much the other stuff you wrote. I thought the driving sequences were well-executed and tense but overall, it really left me cold, that film. Also, I would describe the romance between Gosling and Mulligan as 'anemic'.

I wasn't bored, and there were some great scenes, but I wouldn't watch it again. It felt too much like it was trying to impress me while not bringing anything new to the table.

Of course, there is another driving film with another Ryan in it....

YOU PREACH IT, BABY

Refn took a tired, overused, clichéd action movie concept, and made it sophisticated, deep, and thought provoking. It had perfect atmosphere, the pacing shifted excellently between slow and fast, it was riddled with clever symbolism and metaphors (The Toad and the Scorpion was perfect in explaining the story and contrasting the characters)

It's not trying to compensate by being artsy, it's showing that even the most shitty Hollywood movie storylines can be executed in a way that's intelligent and qualitative.

I don't really see the intelligence, to be honest. It's certainly well put together and Refn is no amateur but I don't see any message, it didn't provoke any of my thoughts nor leave me with any memorable insights or philosophical questions the way, say a David Lynch or a Roman Polanski film would.

And that's fine, a film doesn't have to do any of that to be a good film, but apart from it being a stylish, well-paced thriller, there wasn't a part of it that particularly pushed it in the direction of truly saying anything, apart from 'hey, look at me, I'm a minimalistic reimagining of 70's muscle car films, aren't I neat!'.

It was a great throw back to retro-movies while subverting expectations.

It was a slow film, but that's only in comparison to the recent style of non-stop action movies we have nowadays.

I thought that the only thing the movie did badly was have a poor first twenty minutes. Loved the movie and it had some of the best gore effects I've seen.

The way they introduced him to the woman and her child seemed too awkward for most of the audience. On my first viewing I was pretty put off that it went form the getaway scene to such a slow start.

But no movies perfect.

True lies is brilliant, not to spoil anything, but there's scenes where Arnie chases footsoldiers while riding a white stallion and a fist fight on top of a harrier jet.

Also, Total Recall, preferably with Arnies commentary switched on.

That's how I want all commentary, not behind the scenes info, I want a fucking narrator!
