Technical problems

Post by MilkyFresh on Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:20 am

Alright, my shiny pretty laptop keeps crashing.
It crashes during games, browsing the internet, watching videos and doing almost anything. The computer just shuts down with no warning of any kind. The fan is always running when it does, but not very hard. Maybe an overheating problem? I don't know. It is kind of weird. For instance, when playing TF2 it always waits until the end of a game before shutting down, it never does it mid-match. However, when playing Magic it just does it whenever the AI has to think especially hard about something.
I have tried: defragging the computer, deleting all my temporary files and running repeated virus scans. I would really prefer not to take my laptop back to the techies because they are a bunch of lazy cunts and I probably won't get it back for months, but I don't know shit about computers. Anybody?

Drivers, paged pool?

With laptops you can tell when they're overheating.

What gfx card does it have?

...Huh?

I'm completely retarded when it comes to computers, completely.

Well you should be able to determine what graphics card you have by doing the following:
My computer, properties, hardware, device manager, click on display adapters.

Drivers are what 'drives' your hardware.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_driver
They're crazy important and what cause most problems that aren't due to end user stupidity.

Page Pool memory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging
It's pretty important for playing videogames and stuff on not so great systems.

Typically when a computer shuts itself down it's protecting itself from damage. Heat is usually the cause but there are other issues. Perhaps your PSU is to blame.

Need some details on your system specs.

NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 330M is the graphics card. Here's what it says in my system specs.

Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU M520 @2.40GHz

RAM: 4.00 GB (3.36 GB usable)

System type: 32 bit

Don't worry about Paging, 3.36 gbs is heaps of RAM.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html
Grab your drivers from there. Your GFX card isn't super powerful, but its good enough. It shouldn't be causing you any grief beyond simply being unable to play things well.

You've got a dual-core, so make sure you have multi-core functions enabled.

So all your stuff looks good. I'd be concerned with the PSU and motherboard and heat. With laptops it'll feel hot but you're saying it fucks up seemingly at random.

I don't know much about laptops and don't advise you open it up, because the bastards never shut well.

What you could try is going into the BIOS and raising the fan speed. Unless you can control it through some software that came with the card, or if theres a switch inside (probably not with a laptop). If its overheating the fans should be working their guts out when it crashes.

Has it always done this?

On it.

Where do I find the option for that?

Since making this thread I've opened it up and got all the dust out. Problems persist.

Okay, I'll try that.

No, hasn't always done this. Couldn't rightly say when it started though.

"Where do I find the option for that?"
Inside the video options (probably advanced area) for the games you play. It won't be the problem, just a general tip.

What happens when it 'crashes' is it BSOD, no video but sound, nothing at all?

Okay, I'll do that. Driver is updated now too. Maybe that'll help.

It just shuts down immediately, with only a couple of seconds of warning when everything slows down.

If that hasn't fixed it, and seeing as it's a legit shutdown not the video failing - then it's probably either:
Battery
Internal power supply
Power options or start up options (my comp, properties, advanced, power/start up - recovery). Make sure everything that talks about shutting down or timelimits before shutdowns fucks right off (temporarily to see if this resolves the issue).
BIOS fan speeds/covering air holes/malfunctioning preventative measures or something beyond my understanding.

I've fixed some of my friends computers by just opening them up and bending capacitors back into place. Weird shit that.

This is why I hate laptops.

Make sure it's not just overheating though. What OS are you running?

Not sure if it's fixed yet, only time will tell. Also picking up a cooling pad, maybe that's all it needs.

Thanks for the help either way.

Oh, I'm not sure you want to do that. I've seen her insides. There's a layer of dust half an inch thick.

Gross.

Don't give me that candice, I've seen the way you show off your USB ports to the other guys.

The rape would explain your technical problems. Protip: I recommend in the future inserting KY jelly into the sockets beforehand.
